Become a successful and respectful tattoo artist takes much more than buying a kit and going to town on your friends arm. In fact, that could be very dangerous (don’t try it at home)! There are many steps that successful businessmen of the trade take; it will be in your interest to do the same.
First of all tattoo training and writing is an ART. It is not about simply using a machine and being able to sketch a picture of your dorky teacher in class, as you don’t pay attention. If you want to be a successful tattoo artist you need to attain artistic skills. This leads us to our first step.
Take art classes/workshops. If you’re in school, focus on art majors and classes. If you’re no longer in school, find classes offered at your nearest university. Without serious connections and amazing talent it’s hard to market yourself without the proper credentials, taking classes does both this, and train you in the arts. This is absolutely essential for tattoo training. For more help, buy some tattoo training books, and if at all possible work with an actual tattoo artist.
Next you want to focus on an apprenticeship. This means, you will want to find and work alongside with a tattoo artist, at his tattoo shop. This again, beefs up your credibility and your skill. Note that this could be quite expensive, as tattoo artist charge a decent amount for you to learn and work with them. Note also, you don’t get paid for this, so it may be wise to keep your day job… for now.
Once you are done you are one step closer. Now it becomes your responsible to progress in to the tattoo artist you want to become. You need to learn the business. Research and learn what typical shops have in terms of equipment, needles and ink. Learn the various tools and how to use them (if the apprenticeship didn’t do that).
Call other tattoo shops and ask how they did it. I know, this seems counter-intuitive, but the best way to become successful in any field, is to do what successful people did. If you feel there may be a “competition†between the two of you, call a random (but profitable) tattoo shop in another state—no competition there.
You could say something like “Hey! Your shop is amazing, and truly inspiring, I am just starting out myself and wondered if there are any tips that could help me out?†You will be surprised how much you could learn, and what a help they could be. Finally, keep at it. It’s easy to give up hope and quite when things seem out of reach. This is where you need to want it the most. Keep focused, keep dedicated and you will reach what it is you want!
